Interview: Pedro Meyer

22 Jul Interview: Pedro Meyer

Interviewed by Tasnim Samiha Hosssain

Pedro Meyer is a Brazilian singer-songwriter based in Denver, Colorado. I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Pedro for an exclusive interview to learn more about his background as an artist and his creative process for making music.

“If I had to describe my music it would be a fusion of Rock pop blues and Americana. My inspiration comes from classic, legendary artists such as Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer. They laid the foundation to what made me start playing music and how I started writing my own songs. However, I do think newer artists such as Theo Katzman are starting to shape how I approach putting the music together and start playing songs to harmonies.” – Pedro Meyer, for FanFlex, when asked about the type of music he creates and where he finds his inspiration.

Pedro was born and grew up in Brazil and only moved to America when he turned 23 to jump-start his career in music. I was curious to see if his background had any affect on the music that he made.

“I feel like my background growing up had an opposite effect on me and my music. My dad was very eclectic and he was also a songwriter and composer but he made Brazilian music so it was more Bossa nova and Samba. I do enjoy aspects of Brazilian music but as an angsty teenager I just wanted to play rock and roll. My mom was super into bands like U2 and The Cure so it was easy for me to get access to that kind of music.” – Pedro Meyer, for FanFlex.

In his journey of making music, Pedro mentioned that he does want to collaborate with other artists. He mentions an artist named Calvaro, who writes mainly 80s rock anthem songs and thinks it would be very fun to collaborate with someone like him.

Pedro went on to talk about why he is so passionate about making music. He feels like music always has a very specific way to tell stories that a lot of other means don’t.

“With movies, you depend on a lot of things to get the story to come through and shine but music can be very beautiful and crude and minimal. You can put as many colors as you want as you move forward. It gives us, as musicians, a huge palette of things we can express ourselves with. With just a melody line and a guitar, you can orchestrate something beautiful and I just really enjoy putting all those pieces together. The story becomes more interesting instead of it just being words.” – Pedro Meyer, for FanFlex.

Pedro then went on to express his love for playing the guitar. It’s what he’s focused on for most of his life. He’s constantly finding new things to learn about guitars and he’s made sure he’s proficient at it. He described the guitar as his “forever instrument”.

As Pedro has been making music for over 15 years, I was very intrigued about his creative process and how he overcame any creative blocks. He admitted that he had an interesting take on this topic.

“Firstly, I believe that the concept of creative blocks is a myth. A creative block is when you run out of ideas. To be honest, I think the world ran out of ideas and we’re just looking at different perspectives when looking at the same thing. So if I feel like I don’t have enough to say about a certain topic I just think about it from someone else’s viewpoint. I wrote this song called “Please Remember Me” and it’s from my father’s point of view. Most of all, I think if you want to create something concrete and tangible, you just have to write it down. As soon as you write it down, you can have that idea forever and you can go back to it and develop it over time.” – Pedro Meyer, for FanFlex.

As Pedro is based in Denver, he talks about his favorite venues in the city. When asked about if there are any venues he would like to perform at in the future, Pedro emphasizes on how every artist in Colorado wants to perform at Red Rocks but he wants to perform at Bluebird which is a more intimate venue and he’s seen some of his favorite acts there.

“One of my favorite venues is probably The Roxy. I have played there a few times. They are very focused on delivering a good experience for the artist and the audience. Their stage is well set up, their sound production team is good and they are also very communicative. I’ve also performed at obscure places that aren’t really venues like corporate parties and weddings. I booked a show at this wine restaurant called “Attimo” which was a unique experience.” – Pedro Meyer, for FanFlex.

In the past Pedro has booked many shows with FanFlex. FanFlex found Pedro on Instagram because of certain hashtags he used to promote his posts and reached out to him.

“With the help of FanFlex, I was able to book shows at a venue called “Herman’s Hideaway” in Denver and they were actually very successful shows. The gig that I got paid the most for was a FanFlex show. The best thing about using FanFlex to book shows is the amount of artists I get to meet. I love how this platform brings different types of artists together and you meet people with similar goals and aspirations. I still write songs and play with some of the artists to this day. A year later I joined FanFlex as an intern and it helped me see the business side of music. You get to see the obstacles new, independent artists face when getting things done. I feel like this is where FanFlex helps deal with marketing and booking so the artist can focus on the music. They give you a network of venues that you can connect with if an artist wants to expand from their local area. It really helps that I don’t have to keep track of the venues because that’s what FanFlex does.” – Pedro Meyer, for FanFlex.

Pedro emphasizes that FanFlex has really helped him grow as an artist. Pedro’s next goal is to have five more songs recorded by the end of 2022, which allows him to set aside more time to focus on writing. He has a song that he self recorded that’s ready to go and will be released in August 2022.

His debut EP “The Right Resolve” is out on all streaming platforms under Pedro Meyer. If you want to follow his journey as an artist make sure to check out his work on Instagram and Spotify. Keep an eye out for his next song this summer!
