Music videos are a huge part of any artist’s identity. They open the door for fans to see a side of their favorite artists that they may have never seen before. While listening to the song gives fans an inside look into the artist’s thoughts and feelings, it doesn’t give the whole message like a music video does. As an independent artist, music videos can be quite the hassle. Finding a director, cinematographer, lighting crew, and more can be difficult. And more importantly, expensive. So, here are some helpful tips on how to create a music video as an indie artist that still conveys everything you want it to, without breaking the budget.

Map out your ideas. Planning is crucial to laying out your ideas and getting various opinions on how to improve. This step is so important because you don’t want to go into shooting your music video without knowing where to start and wasting peoples time. After getting your ideas down, you need to establish what team or group of friends can help you create the video. Finding the right people to help you and bring positive vibes to your video is greatly appreciated by artists. You also need to consider costumes, locations, and what equipment you need to bring to shooting day!

Come up with a budget. If you don’t find friends that are willing to help you with your video for free, you will need to acknowledge how much your crew will be paid. Also, if you are shooting at a location or renting video equipment, you will have to add that into your budget. Remember, don’t just settle for making a video that you didn’t spend much time making and end up not loving the result. Save up and really be passionate about what you are making so it’s worth it in the end.

Pick the best location. Do some research and find a location that fits the vibe of your video and song perfectly. There could be only one location if that suits you, but finding various locations makes the video a bit more interesting and keeps people engaged. There are so many locations that you don’t have to pay for. So, finding something that you love and don’t have to spend money on is great!

Be creative! When actually shooting and editing the video, make choices that will wow. Being simple is the safe bet, but doing something out of the box and unique from other artists’ videos is what will make yours stand out and be remembered. Don’t be scared to experiment with friends and ask their opinions about something if you’re unsure. Constructive criticism is a great way to find all the possibilities without getting too frustrated or negatively criticized.

Promote, promote, promote! Releasing the video to your fans is the best part of making any music video for artists! Seeing the feedback and positive connections your fans have for your video is the final pat on the back. FanFlex encourages their artists to create unique and meaningful content because of how much it builds an artist up. FanFlex also helps promote artists’ content on various social media platforms! Knowing you made something that feels unique to you and your music provides such positive feelings to artists and is something they can look back on in their future career with a smile.
